Rick Hamelin visited the Wheeler Memorial Library on Tuesday morning to share his knowledge of pottery history and demonstrate clay techniques on his potter's wheel. He shared that in ancient times people would decorate jugs with faces to ward off bad luck, showing as he spoke how such a piece could be formed. He also discussed the Terracotta Warriors in ancient China, and brought the topic closer to home with information about clay found in Orange, and the pottery that can be viewed at the Orange Historical Society. His skills shaping faces, figures, and even a dragon delighted the audience.
Mr. Hamelin allowed children to try making their own pinch pots. Kids even got to feel the clay thrown on his wheel. Mr. Hamelin's visit was made possible through a grant from the Orange Cultural Council and the Friends of the Orange Libraries. Find out more about Mr. Hamelin at http://www.piedpotterhamelin.com/
