Summer Reading Program starts with a Bang!

PHOTO:  Dr. Platypus and Children's Librarian Candy Cross are ready for FIZZ, BOOM, READ fun at Wheeler Memorial Library in Orange

Ask any Orange Elementary Student and they can tell you the name of this summer's reading program; They may even tell it to you with “special effects:” FIZZ, BOOM, READ!!! For the last three weeks

Children's Librarian, Candy Cross, and her assistants, Dr. Platypus and Dr. Flowerpus, have visited every classroom to let the students know about all the fun events happening at Wheeler Memorial Library this summer. There are at least 3 events each week from June 23 through August 14 along with free reading logs, stickers, a variety of prizes to be earned through time spent reading, and the annual readers' gift to the Orange Food Pantry. This gift, funded mainly through the Friends of the Orange Libraries, is determined by the amount of time the children spend reading. Last year the children read 1,332 hours which raised $500.00 for the Orange Food Pantry.

Sign-up for FIZZ, BOOM, READ, starts at 1:00pm on Thursday June 19. Registration for special events can happen at that time. Some workshops require registration because of limited space. When registration is suggested, non-registered participants will be admitted on a first come, first admitted basis. All these activities are funded through the Family of Betty Watkins, the Friends of the Orange Libraries, The Massachusetts Library System, the Boston Bruins, the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners, and Valuing Our Children. This means the community is invited to every event FREE of charge.

The very first Summer Reading Program Happening is a funny play performed by University of New Hampshire's student theater troupe on Wednesday, June 25 at 6:00. These college students will bring laughter and delight through several Mark Twain plays including The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County. The play will occur on the Wheeler Memorial Libray's side lawn or at the Orange Town Hall if it is raining. Every is invited to be part of the fun at the Wheeler Memorial Library.

Watch for more announcements. A full schedules of events follows and is available at the Wheeler Memorial Library. For more information you may call the Children's Room: 978-544-2495 x103 or visit: www.orangelib.org
